The news net used data from Mercer's latest global report on personal safety and Foreign Policy magazine's most recent report on murder rates, as well as reports by Forbes and security watchdog Citizen's Council for Public Security.
The results were based on factors such as internal stability and effectiveness of law enforcement, as well as official crime statistics and media reports.
The only other U.S. city to make the list? New Orleans. Why is Detroit one of the worst places to live?
it is one large black ghetto!
Wayne County (site of Detroit proper) has had a greater loss of population in the last ten years than any other county in North America, due largely of course to job loss. There are literally thousands of vacant homes, prime areas for drug dealing and other crimes.
Detroit has a 30% unemployment rate. When people don't work, they turn to illicit activity in order to survive; again, drug dealing, with the resultant murder rate that goes along with it, as well as prostitution.
Mayor Dave Bing plans to begin "shrinking" the city in order that it can be better policed, beginning with the razing of 3000 vacant homes this year. Entire unviable neighborhoods will disappear. It's a great idea, one that I wish my former city, Flint, would adopt. In place of these abandoned and burned-out homes will be farms and orchards.
Having said all that, I visit Detroit with some frequency. Comerica Park is incredible, as is the Fox Theater, Ford Field and other attractions. Why is Detroit one of the worst places to live?
The Devil focuses on a few hubs (or strongholds) to make them more resistant to Church and police intervention and Detroit is one of them. The criminal syndicates want places where they are hidden by the camouflage of lesser criminal activity. Detroit has a lot of drug activity and violent crime.
Detroit is a mission field.
The shrinking tax base will not permit a greater police presence. Why is Detroit one of the worst places to live?
Because unemployment is so high and there are so few manufacturing jobs. The area is seriously depressed.
But actually suburban Detroit is a GREAT place to live. The Auburn Hills area and Grosse Point are terrific communities with thriving shopping areas and wonderful neighborhoods. I have friends that live in both places and I have visited them when I drive over from East Lansing. They're safe and attractive communities.
Hope that helps. Good luck!
The crime rate for one .The fact that it's so close to Ontario ,Canada (the largest concentration of Organized Crime groups in North America, especially bikers),and again the fact that it's so close to the largest unprotected border on the planet! Prime pickins' for criminals.
im sure every city in the u.s. has a small or large part where the crime rate is high and the local pop. is largely unemployed.
ive learned that just because its on the news doesn't make it entirely true.
